In a time of deep spiritual crisis, the nation of Israel found themselves distant from God, caught up in the pursuit of earthly things like wisdom, power, and wealth. Through the voice of the prophet Jeremiah, God reached out to His people, urging them to return to Him and realign their priorities.
During Jeremiah’s time, Israel was surrounded by threats both from outside and within. They were politically unstable, morally corrupt, and spiritually lost. It was in this setting that Jeremiah delivered God’s messages of warning and a call for repentance.
“Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.” Jeremiah 9:23–24
Today, just like in Jeremiah’s time, it’s easy to find ourselves valuing the gifts over the Giver.
Whether it’s our careers, abilities, or material wealth, these things can often lead us to feel self-sufficient and detached from our need for God. This scripture invites us to examine our hearts and consider what we truly hold most dear.
Knowing God means more than being aware of His existence—it means understanding His heart and character. God delights in lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness and desires for us to embody these qualities. This relationship is the true source of wisdom, strength, and prosperity.
Jeremiah 9:23-24 challenges us to shift our glory from our temporary earthly gains to the eternal and fulfilling relationship with God.
