“Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the Lord thy God giveth thee to possess it.” Deuteronomy 19:14
This verse emphasizes the importance of respecting the boundaries set by those before us. These boundaries, or landmarks, were established to ensure fairness and to prevent disputes over land ownership.
The idea of not moving landmarks goes beyond just physical boundaries. It also represents the moral and spiritual guidelines laid down by our predecessors. Many of us have had parents or spiritual leaders who set godly examples—landmarks—for us to follow. These spiritual landmarks guide us and help define our path in life.
As believers, we must be vigilant in protecting these spiritual landmarks. God commands us to hold on to these principles as they help maintain our spiritual integrity and ensure we remain on the right path.
Here are some key landmarks that we should adhere to:
1. Reading Our Bible Every Day:
This keeps us connected to God’s word and grounded in our faith.
2. Telling Others of Christ:
Sharing the gospel is a fundamental principle that Jesus himself emphasized.
3. Being Kind and Loving:
This reflects the nature of Christ.
4. Helping the Weak:
Supporting those in need is a testament to our faith in action.
In the New Testament, these principles are echoed in various passages. For example, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” This underscores the importance of scripture in guiding our lives.
Furthermore, Matthew 28:19-20 commands us to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” This highlights the importance of evangelism.
By holding firm to these spiritual landmarks, we honor God and the legacy of those who have guided us. Just as it was forbidden to move physical landmarks in ancient times, we should never allow our spiritual landmarks to be moved or altered, not for a day, a week, or ever.
