Pastors, Priests & Prophets

“The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.” Jeremiah 2:8

Jeremiah, often called the weeping prophet, was tasked with delivering God’s messages during a tumultuous time in Israel’s history. His prophecies came during the reigns of the last kings of Judah, leading up to the Babylonian captivity. The heart of Jeremiah’s message centered around a call for Israel to repent from its idolatry and return to faithful worship of the Lord. Unfortunately, this message was largely unheeded.

Israel, as described in the Book of Jeremiah, was in a spiritual decline. Idol worship was rampant, and the covenant made with God was consistently broken. Despite Jeremiah’s warnings and the clear signs of their impending doom, the people of Israel continued down a path of disobedience and disloyalty to God.

This continued rebellion led to a sad and inevitable conclusion: the destruction of Jerusalem and the Babylonian exile. Israel did not escape judgment, largely because they failed to heed the warnings and repent from their sinful ways.

The Blame Lies With the Leaders:

As God begins to describe why this catastrophic fate befell Israel, He points to three specific groups: the Priests, the Pastors, and the Prophets.

Priests: These were the religious leaders expected to know and teach God’s law. Instead of guiding the people towards a faithful relationship with God, they ignored His presence and failed to ask, “Where is the LORD?” Their neglect contributed to the people’s spiritual blindness and downfall.

Pastors: Translated from the word for shepherds, these leaders, like kings, were responsible for tending to the spiritual & moral direction of the nation. However, they transgressed against God by leading the people astray rather than keeping them aligned with God’s statutes.

Prophets: Expected to be the mouthpieces of God, these individuals instead prophesied by Baal and followed worthless pursuits. Their false prophecies encouraged the people to engage in idolatry, leading them further away from the truth.

In today’s America, we can see similar patterns of spiritual leadership that can either lead to national revival or decline. Just as in Israel, the health of our nation depends significantly on the integrity and spiritual direction provided by our leaders.

Sadly, our churches are full of entertainment, but lack the presence of God. Our leaders, rather than calling on God, they call on the people to fulfill their lust. And the message of today is to do what feels good and have no thought of the Lord.

The Direction of America Spiritually:

The spiritual direction of America is at a pivotal juncture. The challenges we face are not merely economic or political, but deeply spiritual. As in the days of Jeremiah, the call for repentance and a return to faithful adherence to God’s ways is crucial. The lessons from Jeremiah 2:8 serve as a stark reminder that the fate of a nation heavily relies on the spiritual integrity and accountability of its leaders.

Our society can either learn from the historical example of Israel and strive to correct its course through genuine spiritual renewal, or it can continue down a path that leads away from God, risking the consequences that come with such decisions.
