What Must I Do to Be Saved?

Acts 16:30-31 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

The story of how the jailer and his family were saved is quite remarkable.

Paul and Silas had been thrown into prison for preaching the gospel. Even while facing death, they didn’t despair. Instead, they prayed and sang praises to God, showing their unwavering faith and trust in Him. As they worshipped, God sent an earthquake that shook the foundations of the prison, causing all the doors to open and the chains to fall off the prisoners (Acts 16:25-26).

The jailer, awakened by the commotion, saw the prison doors open and assumed all the prisoners had escaped. In a panic, he drew his sword to kill himself, fearing the consequences of losing his prisoners. But Paul cried out with a loud voice, “Do thyself no harm: for we are all here” (Acts 16:27-28).

The jailer, trembling, fell before Paul and Silas and brought them out, asking, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” Paul and Silas replied, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house” (Acts 16:29-31). That night, the jailer and his entire household believed in Jesus and were baptized.

This story shows God’s incredible plan and power. The jailer was so terrified when the doors opened because he knew the penalty for losing prisoners was severe. Yet, instead of running away, Paul and Silas stayed, leading to the salvation of the jailer and his family. It reminds us that God is always in control, even in the hardest times.

We must remember that when we face difficult situations, God’s will is still at work. Just as He used Paul and Silas’s imprisonment to bring salvation to the jailer and his household, He can use our trials for His greater purpose. Trust in God’s plan and seek His will in all things.
