“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men” (Proverbs 22:29).
This verse from Proverbs offers a powerful lesson on the value of diligence in our work and how it can lead to great rewards. But what does it really mean to be diligent in our business, and how does this diligence bring us before kings?
Diligence in business means being consistent, swift, and ready in whatever work God has called us to do. Whether we work for ourselves or for others, being diligent means industriously pursuing our tasks, attending to them cheerfully, and making quick dispatch of our duties. A diligent person doesn’t procrastinate or grow weary of their work; they handle their responsibilities promptly and with care.
When we observe someone who is diligent, we can foresee their future success. This kind of person, though rare, is destined to rise in the world. They will stand before kings and not remain in the company of the obscure or insignificant. Think of Joseph, who was diligent in his work in Potiphar’s house. His faithfulness and hard work eventually led him to stand before Pharaoh, the king of Egypt (Genesis 39:4). His diligence elevated him from a position of servitude to one of honor and influence.
But this principle doesn’t just apply to our earthly endeavors; it also has spiritual significance. Every Christian has a work to do in the Lord’s service.
Ministers must diligently engage in reading, studying, praying, and preaching the Word.
Every believer is called to exercise grace and perform good works, both in their personal lives and within their church.
Those who are diligent in their spiritual duties will not find themselves in the company of the sons of darkness, those who live without the light of Christ. What fellowship can light have with darkness? Instead, the diligent will find themselves in the company of the saints, who are made kings and priests unto God. They will be admitted into the presence of the King of kings now and have communion with Him.
In the end, the diligent will stand before the ultimate King. At the great day of judgment, they will stand before Christ and not be ashamed. They will stand at His right hand and enjoy His presence forever.
Proverbs 22:29 teaches us that diligence in our work, both earthly and spiritual, leads to honor and favor. Whether it is in our daily tasks or in our service to God, let us strive to be diligent, knowing that our efforts will be rewarded not just in this life but in the life to come.
