The Four “In Whom” Statements in Ephesians 1

Ephesians 1 is filled with truths about who we are in Christ. In this passage, the Apostle Paul highlights four powerful “In Whom” statements that reveal the blessings we have as believers.

Let’s take a closer look at these four statements found in verses 7, 11, and 13.

1. In Whom We Have Redemption

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.” – Ephesians 1:7

Redemption is the act of being bought back or rescued from bondage. Through the blood of Jesus Christ, we have been redeemed from sin and its consequences. This redemption isn’t something we earned; it’s given to us according to the riches of God’s grace when we confess our need of Christ. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, our sins are forgiven, and we are set free. This truth should fill us with gratitude and compel us to live for Him.

2. In Whom We Have Obtained an Inheritance

“In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.” – Ephesians 1:11

As believers, we have an inheritance in Christ that is eternal and secure. This inheritance is part of God’s perfect plan. It’s not just something we will receive in the future; it’s something we can experience now.

Knowing that we have this inheritance should motivate us to live with an eternal perspective, storing up treasures in heaven rather than on earth.

3. In Whom We Trusted

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.” – Ephesians 1:13a

Trusting in Christ is the foundation of our salvation. After hearing the word of truth, the gospel, we placed our trust in Jesus Christ. This act of faith brought us into a relationship with Him and secured our place in God’s family. But this truth doesn’t stop with us; it should drive us to share the gospel with others. Soul winning is an essential part of our Christian life. Just as we trusted in Christ after hearing the gospel, others will too, if we are faithful in sharing it. Our trust in Christ should lead us to actively engage in sharing the message of salvation with those around us.

4. In Whom We Were Sealed with the Holy Spirit

“In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.” – Ephesians 1:13b

When we believed in Christ, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit, marking us as God’s own. This seal is a guarantee of our inheritance until the day of redemption. The Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives is a continual reminder of God’s promise and our security in Him. No matter what trials we face, we can rest in the assurance that we are sealed and secure in Christ.

The four “In Whom” statements in Ephesians 1 reveal the incredible blessings we have in Christ: redemption, an inheritance, trust, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit. As believers, these truths should shape how we live, motivate us to share the gospel, and fill us with confidence in our eternal security. Let’s take these truths to heart and walk in the blessings of being “in Him.”
