Wisdom Above Wealth

Proverbs 16:16 How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!”

From roverbs, we learn that wisdom is far more valuable than earthly riches. This truth is illustrated in the life of King Solomon.

When Solomon became king, he was given an incredible opportunity by God: “Ask what I shall give thee” (1 Kings 3:5). Solomon could have asked for anything—long life, riches, or the death of his enemies. Instead, Solomon asked for an understanding heart to judge God’s people and discern between good and evil. This selfless request pleased God.

God responded to Solomon in a remarkable way: “Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days” (1 Kings 3:11-13).

Solomon’s choice for wisdom above wealth and power resulted in him receiving wisdom, and along with it, God also bestowed upon him riches and honor.

Solomon’s story teaches us a powerful lesson: when we prioritize what God values—wisdom, understanding, and righteousness—God can provide us with blessings beyond our expectations. It’s a reminder that seeking wisdom leads to a life enriched not just by knowledge, but often by unexpected rewards.

When we align our desires with God’s priorities, life becomes easier and more fulfilling. We find that the rewards we receive often go beyond material wealth and bring true joy and satisfaction.

In our own lives, we can learn from Solomon’s example. Instead of chasing after wealth and power, let us seek wisdom and understanding first. As Proverbs 3:13-14 says, “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.”

Choosing wisdom above wealth not only pleases God but also sets us on a path where rewards come in unexpected and wonderful ways. Let us seek wisdom from God and trust Him to provide for all our needs.
