Building Christian Character from Colossians

In Colossians 3, Paul gives believers a clear guide to developing Christian character. It’s a process that involves seeking the things of God, setting our hearts on heavenly matters, and allowing the transformation of our lives to reflect Christ.

Here are five steps to help us grow in our walk with the Lord.

1. Seek (Colossians 3:1)

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.”

This verse reminds us to focus on eternal things. Our goals and desires should reflect our hope in Christ, rather than the temporary pleasures of this world. Think about what pleases God and set your mind on those things. Whether it’s growing in faith, loving others, or honoring God, your life should be aimed toward eternity.

Application: Define your top three spiritual goals. Perhaps you want to deepen your prayer life, become more Christlike, or begin to share the gospel.

2. Set (Colossians 3:2)

“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”

This passage emphasizes aligning our desires and passions with God’s will. By focusing on heavenly matters, we resist being swayed by worldly distractions. When our affection is on Christ, it changes how we live and what we pursue.

Application: Identify three things you’re most passionate about in relation to Christ. Are you driven by a desire to serve the church, share the gospel, or grow closer to the Lord? Once you identify those, set your mind to be faithful at doing those things.

3. Subdue (Colossians 3:3-7)**

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God… Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth.”

This call to subdue our sinful nature means putting to death those old desires that don’t align with God’s will. Paul reminds us that we are dead to sin and alive in Christ. This requires daily self-denial and a commitment to follow Jesus fully.

Application: Look at areas in your life where you need to “subdue” sin. Ask God to help you surrender those habits and replace them with wholesome activities.

4. Supplement (Colossians 3:12-16)

“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering…”

After putting off the old nature, we are called to put on godly traits that reflect the character of Christ. This includes mercy, kindness, humility, and patience. These qualities help us grow in our relationship with God and others.

Application: Read your Bible and pray everyday. This will cultivate the fruits of the Spirit. Whether it’s kindness, humility, or patience, ask God to help you grow in these areas and reflect Christ in your interactions with others.

By following these steps—seeking heavenly things, setting our hearts on Christ, subduing the sinful nature, and supplementing our lives with godly traits—we will walk closer to Christ and develop a Christian character that honors Him.
