“This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.” (1 Timothy 3:1)
God has made it clear what a pastor must do to qualify for the position, but these verses also give every Christian something to strive for. While the calling to be a pastor is specific, the qualities laid out in these verses reflect a standard that every believer should aim for in their life. They challenge us to grow and become more like Christ every day.
Here are some qualities we can all strive to reflect:
1. Blameless – Live in a way that accusations don’t stick. Your character should be so solid that when others accuse you, no one believes it because they know the life you live.
2. Faithful – Stay committed in all relationships, especially in your marriage. Be a person who can be counted on to keep your word.
3. Self-controlled – Practice discipline in every area of your life, from your thoughts to your actions. Keep a clear mind and make wise decisions.
4. Respectable – Live a life that earns the respect of others by how you handle yourself and treat others.
5. Hospitable – Be welcoming and show kindness to others, especially to those in need or those you may not know well.
6. Not quick to anger – Exercise patience and self-control, not reacting in anger when situations get tough.
7. Not greedy – Be content with what you have, avoiding the love of money and material things, and instead, be generous to others.
8. Manage your life well – Take responsibility in your personal life, with your family, and in all your duties. Lead by example in how you handle your responsibilities. Discipline and correct your children.
9. Spiritually mature– Keep growing in your faith, not being easily swayed or puffed up with pride. Be grounded in God’s Word.
10. Good reputation – Live in a way that reflects Christ, not only in the church but also with those outside the church. Your testimony should be consistent in every area of your life.
These qualities reflect a standard that is a cut above. While no one is sinless, God wants us to always be growing, becoming more like Christ.
Whether or not you’re called to be a pastor, let these verses challenge you to live a life that honors God and influences others for good. Each day is an opportunity to grow and strive toward this higher standard.
