Revelation 3:20
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”
A Lukewarm Church: The History of Laodicea
The verse in Revelation 3:20 was spoken by Jesus as part of His message to the church in Laodicea. Laodicea was a wealthy city, known for its banking, fine wool, and a popular eye salve that people sought for healing. This city had material riches, but its church was spiritually poor. Jesus described the Laodicean church as “lukewarm” — neither hot nor cold.
In ancient times, hot water was useful for healing and cleaning, while cold water was refreshing and life-giving. But lukewarm water, neither useful nor refreshing, was unpleasant and unsatisfying. Spiritually speaking, this lukewarmness reflected a church that was complacent, indifferent, and self-satisfied.
The Laodicean church thought they had everything they needed, yet Jesus saw that they were spiritually empty. He warned them that, unless they repented, He would “spew them out” (Revelation 3:16). This picture of lukewarmness is a warning to every believer and church that lets spiritual fervor fade into apathy.
Lukewarmness Today
Looking at our world today, it’s easy to see how many churches and Christians have also become lukewarm. While people may still attend church, there can be a loss of passion for reaching others, helping those in need, or sharing the truth of the gospel. Many have stepped back from the mission God has given us — to bring others to Christ. Instead, we may find ourselves comfortable, going through the motions without a real desire to grow closer to God or help others do the same. Just as the Laodiceans didn’t realize their need, it’s easy for us to forget how much we need the Lord and His work in our lives.
God Knocks at Our Door
Even though the Laodiceans had grown lukewarm, Jesus didn’t abandon them. Instead, He said, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” This picture shows the patience and love of Christ. He stands at the door of our hearts, waiting for us to invite Him in. He doesn’t force His way into our lives. Instead, He offers Himself and waits for us to respond.
Today, God still knocks on the door of each heart. He waits for us to welcome Him in, to invite Him into every part of our lives. When we hear His voice and open the door, He promises to come in and have fellowship with us.
Inviting Jesus In
Jesus’ offer to come into our lives is open to all, but He doesn’t barge in; He waits patiently. Each of us has the choice to respond. Are we willing to let Him in? Are we ready to go beyond lukewarmness and live with purpose and passion for Him? He promises that if we hear His voice and open the door, He will come in and bring us into fellowship with Him.
Revelation 3:20 calls us to take a look at our own lives and our relationship with God. If we find ourselves lukewarm, we can turn back to Him. He’s waiting, knocking, and ready to come in. Let’s hear His voice, respond, and let Him into every part of our lives. This fellowship with Jesus is what brings true peace, purpose, and joy. So, may we not just hear the knock but open the door and experience all that God has for us.
