The book of Revelation paints a picture of the future for believers: a new heaven, a new earth, and a city called the New Jerusalem.
Revelation 21:23 gives us an amazing glimpse into this eternal city. It says, “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.” This verse isn’t just about heaven being bright; it’s about who makes it bright and why that matters.
The Glory of God as the Source of Light
Here on earth, we depend on the sun and moon for light. From the first day of creation, God used light to separate the day from the night. But in heaven, there’s no need for the sun or moon because God Himself is the source of light. His glory shines brighter than any star. Throughout the Bible, God’s glory is described as overwhelming and all-encompassing. It lit up Moses’ face on Mount Sinai and filled the temple in the Old Testament. In the New Jerusalem, that glory will be everywhere, lighting up every corner.
But Revelation 21:23 doesn’t just stop with God’s glory. It says, “the Lamb is the light thereof.” That’s Jesus. He’s not just a part of heaven—He’s the center of it all. Jesus, the Lamb of God, who took away the sins of the world, will forever remind us of His sacrifice. The same Lamb who walked among us, healed the sick, and gave His life on the cross is the very one who lights up eternity.
The Bible describes Jesus as the light. In John 8:12, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world.” When we accept Him as our Savior, He brings spiritual light into our lives, guiding us and giving us purpose. In heaven, that spiritual light will become literal. Jesus will be the eternal lamp that never fades or dims.
Why It Matters Today
It’s easy to read about heaven and think, “That’s great for later,” but this truth about Jesus being the light of eternity should change how we live today. If Jesus is at the center of heaven, shouldn’t He also be at the center of our lives now? Just as His light will fill the New Jerusalem, His light should fill our hearts and guide our steps.
When we go through dark times, we can remember that Jesus is our light, and His glory is enough to carry us through. When we feel like we don’t have direction, we can look to Him, knowing He illuminates our path.
A Glorious Future
Revelation 21:23 reminds us of the hope we have as believers. One day, we’ll live in a place where there’s no need for the sun because God’s glory and the light of Jesus will fill everything. There will be no shadows, no darkness, and no fear—only the brilliance of His presence.
Until then, we can live in that light by keeping Jesus at the center of everything we do. Heaven will be all about Him, so our lives now should be, too. The Lamb is the light in eternity, and He can be the light in your life today.
