Don’t Let Your Shield Go Dull

When Solomon was king, gold was everywhere. He even made golden shields—200 big ones and 300 smaller ones (1 Kings 10:16-17). These weren’t just for looks. They showed off God’s blessing and strength on the kingdom.

But after Solomon died, his son Rehoboam became king. He didn’t follow God like Solomon. The people didn’t either. So God let Shishak, king of Egypt, come and take the treasures—including the golden shields (1 Kings 14:25-26).

Here’s what Rehoboam did:
“And king Rehoboam made in their stead brasen shields…” (1 Kings 14:27)

He didn’t pray. He didn’t cry out to God.

He just made brass shields to look like gold.

He kept the look—but lost the power.

That’s a picture of a lot of Christians today.

We still carry the shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16), but it don’t shine like it used to.

We’ve let it go dull. We’ve kept the form, but lost the fire.

“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof…” (2 Timothy 3:5)

Below are 5 Bible Truths to Keep Your Shield Bright

1. God is your shield—stay close to Him.

“Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.” (Genesis 15:1)

God Himself told Abraham, I am your shield. Not religion. Not family. God.

If your relationship with Him grows cold, your shield goes dull.

2. Trust is the polish for your shield.

“Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.” (Psalm 119:114)

Every time you trust God’s Word, it’s like you’re shining up your faith. Doubt and worry are like fingerprints on the metal—wipe them off with trust.

3. God’s truth is your shield—know it.

“His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4)

You can’t keep a strong shield without truth. Not feelings. Not what the world says. You need real Bible truth, and you need to stand on it.

4. Righteousness makes your shield stronger.

“For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” (Psalm 5:12)

When you live right, God wraps His shield around you. You can’t live dirty and expect a shiny shield. Clean living protects your faith.

5. Praise keeps your shield lifted high.

“But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.” (Psalm 3:3)

When you praise God—even in hard times—it keeps your shield up instead of dragging on the ground. That’s where the strength is: praising through the pressure.

Let’s not carry fake brass. Let’s keep the real thing.

A true shield of faith is strong, trusted, and tested.

Not for show—but for the fight.
