Sour Grapes

Ezekiel 18 is one of those chapters where God clears the air. The people had a saying, “The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge” (Ezekiel 18:2). They believed they were suffering because of what their parents did. In their minds, God’s way wasn’t fair.

But the Lord answers in Ezekiel 18:4, “Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” God doesn’t punish people for the sins of others. Every soul stands before Him on their own.

Personal Responsibility

Ezekiel 18:20 says, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.”

This wipes out excuses. Romans 14:12 reminds us, “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”

Repentance Matters

God doesn’t chain people to their past. Ezekiel 18:21 says, “But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.”

1 John 1:9 agrees, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Sin Brings Death

God also warns in Ezekiel 18:24, “But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity… in his trespass that he hath trespassed, in them shall he die.”

Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

God’s Desire

Finally, God tells us His heart in Ezekiel 18:32, “For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.”

He takes no joy in judgment. His way is life, if only we will turn to Him. 2 Peter 3:9 echoes this truth, “The Lord… is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

God’s way is right. Man’s way blames, excuses, and complains. But God calls us to take responsibility, repent, and live.

Don’t eat sour grapes!
