Jacob: The Chosen Son Who Becomes Israel

Genesis 32:28 “And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”

Matthew 2:15  “And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.”

Jacob was chosen by God before he was ever born. His life was marked by struggle, transformation, and grace. He became Israel, the father of the twelve tribes, and the head of God’s covenant people. Jacob’s life pointed to Christ, the true Israel, chosen and beloved of the Father, who fulfills every promise and connects heaven and earth.

Chosen by God

Before Jacob and Esau were born, God declared, “the elder shall serve the younger” (Genesis 25:23). Jacob was chosen by grace, not by merit. In the same way, Jesus is the chosen and beloved Son of the Father. At His baptism, the Father declared, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17).

Called God’s Son

Exodus 4:22 calls Israel “my son, even my firstborn.” But Matthew 2:15 shows us that this title finds its true fulfillment in Christ: “Out of Egypt have I called my son.” What was true of the nation in picture is true of Jesus in reality. He is the true Israel, the perfect Son who embodies God’s purpose.

Wrestled and Prevailed

Jacob wrestled with God and prevailed, and his name was changed to Israel (Genesis 32:28). That struggle marked his transformation. Jesus also prevailed in His wrestling, not against God, but in submission to Him. In Gethsemane, He prayed in agony, yet yielded to the Father’s will (Luke 22:44). Hebrews 5:7–9 says He was heard and “became the author of eternal salvation.”

The Nation and the True Representative

Jacob became Israel, the father of the twelve tribes, chosen to carry the covenant. But Jesus declared, “I am the true vine” (John 15:1). He embodies all that Israel was meant to be. Where the nation stumbled, Christ stood firm. He is the true representative of God’s people.

The Promise of Blessing

God told Jacob, “In thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 28:14). Paul explains in Galatians 3:16 that the seed is Christ. The promise to Jacob was fulfilled in Jesus, who brings blessing to all nations.

Transformation

Jacob’s name means “supplanter” or “deceiver,” but God transformed him into Israel, a prince with God. In the same way, Christ brings transformation to us. 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.” Jacob’s change points to the greater change Christ brings in every believer.

The Gate of Heaven

In his dream, Jacob saw a ladder reaching to heaven and said, “this is… the gate of heaven” (Genesis 28:17). Jesus applied that vision to Himself in John 1:51: “Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” Jesus is the true connection between heaven and earth, the one who opens the way to God.

Jacob’s life was marked by struggle and change, but Christ is the fulfillment: chosen, beloved, obedient, and victorious. Jacob became Israel, but Jesus is the true Israel, the one who brings us into God’s promises.
