“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” (Psalm 116:15)
When we are saved, we look at death differently than those who don’t know the Lord. The gospel makes that difference. Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day. If you believe on Him and receive Him as your Savior, you pass from death unto life. That means your eternity is settled, and death is no longer something to fear.
Here are four truths this verse shows us:
1. God Values His Children
When a believer dies, God calls it “precious.” It matters to Him. The world may see death as the end, but God sees it as His child coming home.
2. Death Is Not Defeat
For the Christian, death is not tragedy, it’s victory. Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. God welcomes us into His presence like a father welcoming a dear child home.
3. Comfort for the Living
This verse reminds us that God is not indifferent. He cares when His people die, and He receives them with love. That gives peace to those who remain.
4. A Reminder of Our Hope
The psalmist understood that death does not have the final word. For God’s people, the day of death is the day of promotion, the day we see our Savior face to face.
All of this is possible because of Jesus Christ. His death was precious too, because it paid for our sins. His resurrection gave us victory over the grave. That’s why, for the believer, death is not the end, but the beginning of eternal life with Him.
