10 Biblical Reasons We Should Tithe Faithfully

Tithing has always been a touchy subject. Some people think it’s optional, others think it’s outdated, and a few would rather argue about it than practice it. But the Bible is very clear. God set up the tithe for a reason, and He expects His people to give faithfully. Here are ten biblical reasons why we should tithe.

1. The Tithe Belongs to the Lord

Leviticus 27:30 says, “And all the tithe of the land… is the LORD’s: it is holy unto the LORD.”

That verse doesn’t leave room for debate. The tithe isn’t ours to keep. It belongs to God, plain and simple. When we hold it back, we’re holding back what is already His.

2. It Honors God With the Firstfruits

Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”

Giving God the first part of our income shows He comes first in our lives. God doesn’t want our leftovers. He deserves the best right off the top.

3. It Supports God’s Work

Numbers 18:21 says, “And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve…”

Back then, the tithe supported the Levites who worked in the tabernacle. Today, it supports the preaching of the gospel and the work of the church. If God’s people don’t tithe, God’s work will lack.

4. God Commands It

Malachi 3:10 begins, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse…”

This is not a suggestion. God didn’t say, “If you feel like it.” He commands it. Tithing is one of the clear instructions given to His people.

5. God Promises Blessing for Obedience

The same verse continues, “…prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing…”

Tithing is the only place in the Bible where God tells us to test Him. He promises blessing when we obey. If we want God’s hand of blessing on our homes, our churches, and our lives, we need to tithe.

6. It Protects Us from Greed

Luke 12:15 says, “…take heed, and beware of covetousness…”

Money has a way of getting its claws into our hearts. Tithing breaks that hold. It reminds us that what we have is from God and belongs to Him. A man who tithes will find it harder to be greedy.

7. It Shows Gratitude for God’s Provision

Deuteronomy 8:18 says, “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth…”

Every dollar we earn is because God gives us the ability to work and earn it. Tithing is our way of saying, “Thank you, Lord, for giving me strength and opportunity.”

8. It Keeps God’s House Supplied

Nehemiah 10:39 says, “…and we will not forsake the house of our God.”

The church can’t run on air. The tithe keeps the lights on, the gospel being preached, the work  supported, and the needs of the ministry supplied. Faithful tithing keeps the house of God strong.

9. Jesus Confirmed It

Matthew 23:23 says, “…these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.”

Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for being nit-picky, but notice what He said. He didn’t tell them to stop tithing. He said they should do it, while also practicing judgment, mercy, and faith. The New Testament still recognizes the tithe.

10. It Testifies That Christ Lives

Hebrews 7:8 says, “And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.”

When we tithe, we are testifying that Jesus Christ is alive and still the High Priest over His people. Our giving is a witness that we believe in Him and His work.

Tithing is not about money as much as it is about faith and obedience. It belongs to God, it honors Him, it supports His work, and it keeps our hearts right. God’s Word is clear: faithful tithing brings blessing, and unfaithfulness brings loss. The choice i
