Stop Using the Wrong Measuring Stick

II Corinthians 10:12

“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves, but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”

This verse cuts pretty sharp. Paul is dealing with a group of men who loved to brag about how great they were. They set their own little standards, gave themselves the highest grades, then expected everyone else to clap for them.

They compared themselves to each other, which is about the worst way to find truth. If you use a crooked ruler, you will always get crooked measurements.

Their logic was faulty because they decided they were the standard. When you measure with yourself, you will always come out looking good, at least in your own eyes.

The Bible gives us better measures. God does not leave us to guess. He gives clear things to check our life by.

1. Measure by the Word of God

James 1:23 to 25 calls the Bible a mirror. It shows you what is really there, not what you wish was there. Psalm 119:105 shows that His Word is the lamp for our path. The Bible is the fixed standard God gave, and it never bends to fit our feelings.

2. Measure by Christ

Romans 8:29 says we are to be conformed to the image of His Son. Ephesians 4:13 says the goal is the full measure of Christ. He is the model. He is the pattern. When He is the measure, nobody can brag. He was without sin and we strive to follow Him!

3. Measure by Obedience

Jesus, in John 14:15, says if we love Him, we keep His commandments. First John 2:3 says we know we know Him if we keep His commandments. God does not measure by our talk, He measures by our obedience.

4. Measure by Faithfulness

First Corinthians 4:2 says it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful. God looks for steady servants. Proverbs 20:6 reminds us that faithful men are rare.

5. Measure by Fruit

Matthew 7:20 tells us fruit reveals what we are. John 15:8 says we glorify the Father by bearing much fruit. This includes holiness, love, purity, generosity, and reaching the lost. Proverbs 11:30 says the one who wins souls is wise.

6. Measure by Humility

Micah 6:8 says to walk humbly with God. James 4:6 says God resists the proud. Pride ruins every measurement. Humility keeps a man honest.

These are the real measuring sticks. These are the things God cares about. Not how we rank against each other, not who looks stronger, not who talks louder. When we measure our lives with His Word, His Son, and His truth, we get an honest view of where we stand. And that is the only view that matters
