Part 3 of 4
Christ offered a better sacrifice
Hebrews 9:23 says the heavenly things needed “better sacrifices” than the old ones.
Under the old system, the high priest went in once a year with animal blood. Every year told you the same thing: this is not finished yet. The blood of bulls and goats could never take away sin. It reminded them of their need and pointed them to a better coming Messiah.
Hebrews 10 says, “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” It also says, “This man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.”
The priests in the Old Testament never sat down in the holy place. Their work was never finished.
Jesus sat down on the right hand of God, the sacrifice is done and nothing needs to be added.
I think about how guilty some people live, even after salvation. They know the verses, but they quietly carry the idea that they need to suffer enough, serve enough, or feel bad enough before God will really forgive them.
That is like dragging a lamb in after the cross and saying, “I just want to be sure.” It is an insult to a better sacrifice.
When you really believe that Christ’s offering was enough, it does not make you casual about sin. It makes you more careful because you love Him more. You also hate your sin more. You stop trying to pay a bill that is already stamped “paid in full.”
