The Captain Who Tasted Death for His Kin

Part 2 of 3

He was made Captain of our salvation

Hebrews 2:10, “For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”

Captain” here has the idea of a leader, a pioneer, the One who goes first and leads others through. He is not a figurehead. He is the One in charge of the whole journey.

Most of us act like we only need the Captain when the waves get tall. When life is smooth, we think we can handle our own little boat just fine.

I have felt that in my own life. On days when the business is going well, the family is healthy, and the ministry is clicking, I find myself drifting into autopilot. I pray, but not as hard. I read, but not as desperate. Then a storm hits. A problem with a child. A health scare. A church burden. Financial issue. Suddenly I remember, “I am not the captain. I never was.”

Jesus was made “perfect through sufferings.” Not that He ever lacked anything in His nature, but as a Savior and Captain, He walked every kind of hard road so He could lead us through ours. He does not guide you from a distance. He has been through trouble deeper than yours, and He knows the way out.

Think about a bus captain for a minute. New workers may not know the route. They do not know which parents are kind, which ones are rough, which apartments have slippery steps, which kids need extra time. The captain does. He has walked that route in the rain and in the heat. So the new worker follows him.

Christ is the Captain of your salvation in a far greater way. He brought you out of death into life, and now He is leading you all the way to glory. He does not just get you on the bus. He rides it with you and brings you to the final stop.

When the fog rolls in on your life, do not trust your own sense of direction. The Captain is there for more than decoration. Ask Him and follow Him. He knows where He is taking you.
