And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after Hebrews 3:5
In the heart of the Epistle to the Hebrews, lies a continuity of faith, from the times of Moses to our present-day walk with Christ.
Hebrews 3:5 encapsulates this beautifully, revealing how the testimonies of faith, though separated by thousands of years, are intrinsically connected in God’s grand design.
Moses: A Servant of God’s Promises
Moses, a figure central to the Old Testament, was more than just a leader for the Israelites. His life and actions served as a living prophecy, a testament to the promises of God. Every step he took, from the banks of the Nile to the heights of Mount Sinai, was a foreshadowing of a greater fulfillment – the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.
His faithfulness in God’s house, amidst trials and tribulations, was not just for the sake of his time but spoke of the future things, the ultimate redemption through Christ. Moses looked forward with hope and expectation to the Messiah, a hope that has been realized in Jesus.
Our Testimony: Looking Back to the Cross
Fast forward thousands of years, and we find ourselves in a different position. As Christians, our testimony begins not with anticipation but with retrospection. When I found Christ and became saved, it was a journey that started from a historical event two millennia ago – the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus.
Our salvation is anchored in the past event of the cross. Unlike the Old Testament believers who looked forward with hope, our faith looks back to the cross, to the moment where Jesus triumphed over sin and death. Our testimony is thus a reflection on the fulfillment of the promises that believers like Moses looked forward to.
The Unity of Faith across Time
This beautiful symmetry in the testimony of faith – Moses looking forward and we looking back – is a powerful reminder of the unity and continuity of God’s plan. From the prophecies of the Old Testament to the fulfillment in the New Testament, and our ongoing walk with Christ, there is a single thread of redemption and grace that runs through.
Sharing my personal journey, I remember vividly the moment I realized the significance of Christ’s sacrifice. It was a spiritual awakening to understand that the cross was not just a historical event but the pivot on which my life turned. In accepting Christ, I joined a lineage of faith that spans back to faithful servants like Moses.
Hebrews 3:5 is not just a testament to Moses’ faithfulness but a reminder to us of the great cloud of witnesses that have gone before us. Our faith, though looking back to the cross, is as alive and active as Moses’ was, looking forward to the Messiah. In this, we find a beautiful work of God’s unchanging plan for redemption and the eternal nature of His promises.
