Nearness of God

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.” Psalm 145:18

God’s omnipresence – His ability to be everywhere at all times – is both comforting and awe-inspiring. It reassures us that no matter who we are or where we find ourselves, God is there.

However, Psalm 145:18 speaks to a different aspect of God’s presence. It’s not just about His omnipresence; it’s about a special kind of nearness that we experience when we earnestly seek Him.

The closeness described in Psalm 145:18 isn’t about mere physical proximity; it’s about a deeper, more personal connection.

This closeness is reserved for those who actively seek God’s presence in their lives. It’s a presence that offers support, guidance, and strength, particularly in times of need.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” James 4:8 This verse beautifully complements Psalm 145:18, illustrating the reciprocal nature of our relationship with God. When we move closer to Him, He moves closer to us. Proverbs 8:17 echoes this sentiment: “I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.” It’s a promise of finding God when we genuinely seek Him.

Jeremiah 29:13 further underscores this truth: “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” It highlights the earnestness and sincerity required in our search for God.

The Conditions for Divine Help:

Psalm 145:18 lays out two clear conditions for experiencing God’s close help: we must call upon Him, and we must do so in truth. This isn’t a mere shout into the void; it’s a call made with awareness and understanding.

What does it mean to call upon God in truth? It requires an understanding of who God is and who we are in relation to Him. God is supreme, righteous, and holy, while we are fallible, often erring, and tainted by sin. Our approach to God must be one of humility, recognizing our own shortcomings and the vastness of His perfection. It’s a call from a place of understanding our need for Him, not from a stance of pride or willful sin.

Psalm 145:18 invites us to a deeper relationship with God. It’s a relationship where His presence becomes a tangible reality in our lives, offering help, guidance, and support. But this relationship requires sincerity and humility on our part. As we call upon God in truth, recognizing our own limitations and His greatness, we find ourselves enveloped in His loving, supportive presence.
