In John 2, we find the account of Jesus’ first miracle at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. This wasn’t like many other miracles Jesus performed later, like a blind man receiving sight or a dead man walking out of a grave. It was a social emergency; a wedding that had run out of refreshments.
While it seems like a small problem compared to leprosy or death, this event reveals the heartbeat of how Jesus used His power.
John 2:11, “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.”
This miracle set the stage for everything that followed in the gospels. A couple things we should notice about Jesus’ miracles.
1. JESUS’ MIRACLES WERE ALWAYS FOR OTHERS
One striking thing you notice is that Jesus never used His divine power for personal gain. He never made a stone into bread when He was hungry in the wilderness. He never called down angels to get Himself off the cross. Instead, He used His power to serve others and meet their needs.
At the wedding in Cana, it was at the request of His mother, Mary, that He performed this public miracle. Turning water into wine was about protecting the joy of a newlywed couple and saving a family from embarrassment.
This selflessness teaches us a massive lesson about the talents and blessings God has given us. We aren’t supposed to use our “power” or our “position” to build our own kingdom. We are called to follow the example of Christ and use what we have to benefit those around us.
2. JESUS RESPONDED TO EVERY INVITATION
Another remarkable part of Jesus’ ministry was how He responded to people. It didn’t matter who extended the invitation; tax collectors, religious leaders, the rich, the poor, men, or women, Jesus welcomed all that came by faith. His love and grace broke through every social boundary.
It doesn’t matter who you are or where you’ve been, Jesus is ready to answer when you call.
Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
The same Lord who sat at a wedding table in Cana is ready to sit with you today. You can approach Him with confidence, knowing He never turns away a sincere heart that seeks Him in faith.
3. JESUS’ MIRACLES ALWAYS IMPROVED THINGS
There is a common thread in every miracle Jesus performed: He made things better. Whether He was healing the sick, feeding the thousands, or raising the dead, His actions brought hope and mended lives.
Even in this first miracle, He took an ordinary element like water, and transformed it into something extraordinary. He didn’t just replace the wine; the governor of the feast said He saved the “best” for last.
This is the transformative nature of Christ. He doesn’t just “fix” your life; He improves it in ways you can’t imagine. He takes the ordinary, “watery” aspects of our lives and turns them into something rich and full of meaning.
4. JESUS’ MIRACLES WERE ALWAYS GRANTED
When someone came to Jesus in faith, He never turned them away empty-handed. From the wine at the wedding to the healing of the centurion’s servant, Jesus responded to faith.
He performed miracles because He is a life giving Savior. His miracles serve as a testament that He has the power to take what is empty and fill it, and take what is broken and make it whole.
The first miracle at Cana shows us that Jesus cares about the details of your life. He cares about your joy, He cares about your family, and He cares about your needs. If He can transform water into the best wine, He can certainly take your current situation and make it into something that brings Him glory.
