One of the most important things for a Christian to do on a consistent basis, every single day, is to learn how to pray and read the Bible. And these two things have to go hand in hand.
The Bible is simply God speaking to us. Prayer is us speaking to God. Together they make a two-way conversation. Take one side of it away and our fellowship collapses.
Bible Reading Without Prayer
If we read our Bible faithfully but never pray, we become puffed up. Full of knowledge, sharp on doctrine and able to quote verses, while correcting others. But it will all be without the heart of God behind it.
1 Corinthians 8:1 “Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.”
Knowledge alone inflates a Christian. It fills him with himself and males him quick to argue and slow to love. The Bible was meant to be relationship we walk in. And prayer is what turns the words on the page into a conversation with the God who wrote them.
The Christian who reads without praying knows the Book but lacks fellowship with the Author.
Prayer Without Bible Reading
The opposite is just as dangerous. If we pray every day but never read the Bible, our heart is pulled toward God but we walk without knowledge.
Romans 10:2 “For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.”
Paul says that Israel had a zeal. They had passion for God. But they had no knowledge to shape it and that zeal without knowledge led them to reject the very Messiah they had been praying for.
The Christian who prays without reading the Bible feels God but has no framework to hear Him accurately.
The Two Together
We need both because God designed us to walk in both.
Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
The Word is the lamp and prayer is how we walk in step with the God who lit it. One shows us the path, while the other keeps us connected to the One leading us down it.
Jeremiah 15:16 “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.”
1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing.”
What Happens When Both Are Consistent
The Christian who reads and prays every day slowly becomes a different person. The knowledge from the Bible fills the mind and the prayer time softens the heart. And over time God shapes both together until we start thinking, speaking, and reacting like Him.
James 4:8 “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.”
Bible reading and prayer are how we draw nigh.
It is wonderfully simplistic. Open the Book and talk to the Lord. Do it again tomorrow and again the day after that. And keep doing it until the fellowship is the deepest thing in your life.
I say all this as a Christian still learning to live this out. There is not perfection in either discipline. The goal is faithfulness. Just showing up every day with an open Bible and a bowed head.
The Simple Test
If your knowledge of the Bible is growing but your heart feels cold, you need more prayer.
If your prayer life feels warm but your walk lacks direction, you need more Bible.
If both feel dry, start again with just one open Bible and a five-minute prayer.
Fellowship with God is available to you. Everything else in the Christian life flows out of it.
