Pleasing the Lord

In our lives, we often encounter crossroads, faced with decisions that test our faith and direction. The question arises: should we wait on the Lord, or take bold steps forward? While these moments may seem daunting, the answer lies in a simple, yet profound directive found in Scripture: please the Lord.

In Colossians 1:10, Paul urges us to live in a way that “might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

This encapsulates the essence of our purpose. Everything created, including us, exists for Jesus Christ, who is “before all things, and by him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17).

What Does It Mean to Please the Lord?

Paul outlines five key actions that please the Lord:

1. Being Fruitful:

We are called to bear fruit in every good work. This involves actively serving Christ in all aspects of life—our jobs, families, and neighborhood. Whether teaching Sunday school, helping those in need, or sharing the Gospel, our actions should glorify God and bear fruit for Him.

2. Increasing Knowledge:

Growth in knowledge of the Lord is crucial. This isn’t just about reading the Bible; it involves studying it, listening to preaching, and importantly, applying these teachings in daily life. True knowledge is tested through action—similar to exercising muscles in the gym, spiritual strength comes through spiritual practice.

3. Strengthening in Might:

Strength in the Lord does not come without its challenges. It often involves enduring hardships, which are essential for growth in strength. Like a soldier in battle, we must be prepared to face adversities with the armor of God (Ephesians 6:11-18), which notably lacks a back plate which acts as a  protection for retreating. This symbolizes a call to stand firm in faith, not back down.

4. Patience, Longsuffering, and Joy:

These qualities might seem separate, but they are interconnected. Patience reflects our ability to endure difficult circumstances with a hopeful attitude. Longsuffering involves persisting in the face of trials without losing faith, and joy is the spiritual contentment found in Christ despite external circumstances. Together, these traits enable us to endure life’s challenges with a positive spirit for the Lord.

5. Giving Thanks:

A thankful heart is fundamental to a Christian life. Gratitude turns our attention to God’s blessings, preventing feelings of bitterness and disappointment. Praising God, rooted in thankfulness, not only honors Him but also reinforces our faith, making us aware of the continuous work He does in our lives.

Applying These Principles

Each day presents new opportunities to please the Lord by following these biblical principles. Whether at a crossroads or on a clear path, focusing on these actions aligns us with God’s purpose for our lives. Here are practical ways to apply these principles:

– Engage in Good Works:

Look for ways to serve within your church. Whether it’s volunteering for bus ministry, assisting in a rest home, or simply lending a helping hand to a neighbor, these actions contribute to a fruitful Christian life.

-Study and Share the Word:

Daily set aside time for Bible study, attend church faithfully and seek out good preaching. Share the insights you gain with others, which not only increases your understanding but also helps spread God’s word.

– Face Challenges with Courage:

When difficulties arise, instead of shying away, face them with the strength provided by faith. Engage God in prayer and seek counsel from  believers who have been serving the Lord longer than yourself, to fortify your spirit.

– Practice Gratitude:

Make it a daily habit to reflect on the blessings God has provided, and express thankfulness in prayer and praise. This will lift your spiritual life and keep your heart aligned with God’s.

By centering our lives around pleasing the Lord, we can navigate any uncertainty with clarity and purpose. As we implement these biblical truths, we’ll find that pleasing Him brings peace and direction to our journey, fulfilling our ultimate call as followers of Christ.
