Storms

“Mightier than the waves of the sea is the LORD on high.” Psalm 93:4

In the heart of the New Testament, within the Gospels, we find an inspiring account of Jesus walking on water. This story, which unfolds in Matthew 14:22-33, reveals a display of Jesus’ divine nature and His command over the natural elements. After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sent His disciples ahead of Him in a boat across the Sea of Galilee while He stayed behind to pray. As night fell, a fierce storm hit the boat, leaving the disciples struggling against the wind and waves.

It was during the darkest watch of the night that Jesus approached them, walking on the raging waters. This miraculous sight terrified the disciples at first, mistaking Him for a ghost. But Jesus quickly reassured them with His calming voice, “Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.” This episode is not just a demonstration of Jesus’ power, but also a lesson in faith and the presence of God in the midst of trials.

The Lord is Mightier Than Our Troubles

As the disciples struggled against a storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus approached them, walking calmly upon the churning waters. This miraculous act is a vivid illustration that no matter the turbulence in our lives, Jesus reigns supreme over all chaos. Just as He commanded the storm to be still, He can bring peace to our hearts and situations with just a word.

Fear is Our Greatest Enemy to Our Faith

Peter’s experience during this event teaches us about the delicate balance of faith and fear. When Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he walked on water—a feat defying all human logic and understanding. However, the moment he shifted his focus to the storm, he began to sink. This shows us that fear can overshadow our faith, making us doubt God’s power. We must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, who is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Jesus Puts Us into the Storm

It’s intriguing to consider that Jesus directed the disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of Him, knowing full well that a storm was brewing. Sometimes, like the disciples, we find ourselves in storms not by our doing but by God’s design. These moments, though challenging, are meant to teach us, humble us, and refine our character. They remind us to seek what Jesus is trying to show us through our trials.

In Psalm 93:4 with the New Testament account of Jesus walking on water, we see a clear message: God’s dominion over nature is an assurance of His greater authority over the problems we face. Let us take heart and draw strength from these lessons, knowing that with Jesus, we can navigate any storm.
