And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. Titus 3:14
In the Bible, the importance of teaching a son a skill is emphasized. In the Jewish culture, it was believed that failing to teach your son a skill was akin to teaching him to steal. This idea highlights the significance of preparing our children to contribute and take care of themselves.
Jesus, the Carpenter:
From the scriptures, we learn that Jesus himself was a carpenter, having learned the trade from Joseph. This example sets a precedent for the value of work and craftsmanship.
Paul, the Tentmaker:
Similarly, Paul, despite his extensive education and role as an apostle, also worked as a tentmaker. This dual aspect of his life shows that one can be both intellectually and practically skilled.
These examples lead us to an important thought: We are called to raise our children by teaching them to work, which is a part of their growth and development.
However, consider this: if failing to teach a son a skill is akin to teaching him to steal, what are the consequences if we neglect to teach our children to serve God? What happens if we don’t instill in them a servant’s heart that is giving, kind and compassionate?
The Mind of Christ:
The Bible encourages us to have the same mindset as Christ, whose spirit was that of a servant. He came not only to seek and save but to heal and mend the broken. Despite his miraculous powers, he used them solely to aid others. Christ’s life was marked by humility and service; he was born in a humble setting and often had no place to call home.
Jesus’s mission was not to engage in political battles or seek authority but to serve humbly. This example of service is what we should impart to our children.
As we teach our children skills to earn a living, we must also teach them the importance of serving others. This includes helping the weak, loving those who are unloved, and living a life of service just as Jesus did.
In doing so, we not only prepare them for the practicalities of life but also enrich their spirits to help and reach the world for Christ.
