Committed to Thy Trust

“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also” (2 Timothy 1:5).

The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, a young pastor, to encourage him in his ministry. Paul recognized the sincere faith that Timothy possessed, a faith that was passed down from his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice. This legacy of faith is a testament to the power of godly influence and the importance of passing down our faith to the next generation.

Paul’s letters to Timothy provide valuable lessons for us today. We see in 1 Timothy 6:20 that Paul urges Timothy to “keep that which is committed to thy trust,” highlighting the importance of guarding the faith and avoiding distractions.

As we reflect on the legacy of faith passed down through generations, I challenge you to take a moment to think about those who have influenced your own spiritual journey. Consider the parents, grandparents, teachers, pastors, and friends who have invested in you, sharing the gospel and living out their faith as examples for you to follow. Their commitment to God and their dedication to nurturing your faith have played a significant role in shaping who you are today. Honor their legacy by continuing to grow in your faith and by passing it on to others, ensuring that the gospel continues to thrive for generations to come.

Here are three key points from Paul’s letters that help us ensure the gospel continues to thrive through you and to the next generation:

1. Keep Going! (I Timothy 6:20)

Paul’s urging to Timothy was clear: “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called” (I Timothy 6:20).

In this verse, Paul emphasizes the importance of perseverance. We must hold tightly to our faith and avoid getting caught up in meaningless debates or false teachings. Just as Timothy was encouraged to stay focused and committed, we too must remain steadfast in our walk with Christ, despite the challenges and distractions we may face.

2. Keep Growing!

Jesus shared the parable of the talents to illustrate the importance of using what we have been given to further God’s kingdom: “For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey” (Matthew 25:14-15). This parable teaches us that God has entrusted each of us with unique gifts and talents. It is our responsibility to develop and use these gifts for His glory. We must continue to grow in our faith and in our service to God, multiplying what He has given us to make a greater impact for the Lord.

This is something we must do if we are to keep the faith which has been entrusted to us.

3. Keep Remembering!

Faithful servants are rewarded: “His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:23).

This verse reminds us of the ultimate reward for faithfulness. By staying true to what has been entrusted to us and diligently working for God, we can look forward to hearing those precious words from our Lord. Remembering God’s promises and the rewards of faithful service can motivate us to continue our efforts and remain dedicated to our calling.

Timothy was encouraged by Paul to be faithful and steadfast in his ministry. The faith that was committed to Timothy’s trust, passed down from his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice, is now passed down to us. This legacy is something we should not take for granted. We must keep going, keep growing, and keep remembering!
