As we begin our journey through Ephesians 5, focusing on what it means to be a follower of God as dear children, we must first lay the foundation: forgiveness.
The word “therefore” at the start of Ephesians 5:1 connects us back to this important principle. Paul writes, “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children.” The “therefore” serves as a reminder to look back one verse to Ephesians 4:32, which says, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
Forgiveness isn’t just a one-time act; it’s a continual attitude of the heart. And who better to learn from than a child? Children are often quick to forgive. They don’t hold grudges for long, and once they’ve forgiven, they move on with simplicity and joy. As adults, we can learn from this childlike approach to forgiveness. Just as children forgive easily, we too must learn to forgive quickly and without holding onto bitterness.
When we forgive, we reflect the very nature of God. He, in His infinite mercy, forgave us through Christ. Just as we have been forgiven, we are called to extend that same grace to others.
We must adopt a forgiving spirit, letting go of resentment and the desire for revenge—much like a child who, after a disagreement, is ready to play again without a second thought.
Holding on to unforgiveness only hinders our relationship with God. It creates a barrier between us and Him, making it difficult to hear His voice and follow His guidance. But when we forgive, we open ourselves to the peace and joy that come from a close relationship with our Heavenly Father.
Forgiveness also impacts our relationships with others. In a world that is often harsh and unforgiving, Christians are called to be different. We are called to forgive, just as Christ forgave us. When we forgive as a child does, with a pure heart, we stand out in a world that desperately needs the light of Christ.
Forgiveness is the foundation upon which we build our walk as followers of God. Without it, we cannot truly imitate Christ. As we continue through this series on Ephesians 5, let us keep this foundational truth in mind. Forgiveness is not optional; it’s essential. It’s the first step in being a follower of God.
