In Ephesians 5:4, the Bible says, “Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.”
This verse teaches us that our words have power—power to either uplift or drag down ourselves and others. The kind of speech Paul warns against here includes filthy, foolish, and jesting communication. These are not just harmless jokes or casual talk; they reflect the wickedness that can proceed from our hearts.
John Gill explains this well when he describes this verse: “The former of these may include all filthy gestures and behavior, every indecent habit and attire, and all actions which have a tendency to excite lust; and also all impure words, these discover an impure heart, and are the means of corrupting men’s minds and manners; filthy speaking is a verbal commission of the things that are spoken of; and it may include all impure songs and books, and the reading or hearing of them.”
These words and behaviors, as the Bible states, “are not convenient.” They are not fitting for a follower of God. Instead, our lips should be filled with thankfulness.
Thanksgiving has a unique ability to shift our focus and change our hearts. It can solve many of the problems we face as humans, especially those that take root in our thoughts and attitudes.
Thankfulness takes away bitterness, resentment, pride, and a host of other sins that we often cling to mentally.
You can’t practice true gratitude to God and be prideful at the same time. True thankfulness comes from a humble heart that recognizes God’s goodness and grace.
Similarly, you can’t be bitter and thankful simultaneously. When we are genuinely thankful, we are reminded of the blessings God has given us.
This gratitude helps us live a better and happier life, free from the mental burdens that can weigh us down.
So, as you follow God, do so with thankfulness. Let your words reflect a heart that is grateful for all that God has done, and you will find that thankfulness not only transforms your speech but your entire outlook on life.
