Why Am I Here? Finding True Purpose

Revelation 4:11: “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

One of the most unique things about humans is our desire to find purpose. Unlike animals, who live their lives without questioning why they exist, we ask big questions like, “Why am I here?” and “What is the meaning of life?” These questions haunt many people, pushing them to seek answers in all kinds of places.

Many try to fill this void with temporary pleasures. Some turn to entertainment, adventure, or work. Others seek meaning in relationships, family, or even harmful escapes like drugs or alcohol. But after a while, they all discover the same thing: these pursuits don’t satisfy. They might bring happiness for a moment, but they leave the soul empty in the end.

The Bible gives us a clear answer to the question of why we are here. Revelation 4:11 says we were created by God and for His pleasure. That means our purpose is not about us—it’s about Him. This truth is simple, yet it can be hard to accept because it goes against human nature. We naturally think life is about finding happiness in ourselves, but purpose is always found outside of ourselves. And it must be something greater than ourselves.

God meets these conditions perfectly. He is the Creator of all things, including you and me. Everything exists because He willed it, and everything—including us—exists to bring Him pleasure. This truth may seem humbling, even uncomfortable, at first. After all, we like to think the world revolves around us. But when we recognize that life is about pleasing God, things actually become simpler.

True Fulfillment Requires Humility

To find your purpose, you must first humble yourself and accept that your life isn’t just about you. That’s a hard thing for most people to do. But Jesus Himself gave us a powerful example of this humility. In John 12:24, He said, “Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” Jesus was speaking of His own death, but He was also teaching us an important truth about life.

Just like a seed has to die to produce life, we must give up our own plans and desires to discover the life God has for us. Jesus said it plainly in Matthew 16:25: “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.” In other words, the more you try to make life about your own happiness and fulfillment, the emptier you’ll feel. But when you surrender your life to God and live to please Him, you’ll find a deeper joy and peace than you ever thought possible.

Living for God’s Pleasure

When we live for God’s pleasure, life takes on real meaning. Every task, no matter how small, becomes an opportunity to glorify Him. Whether it’s raising a family, working a job, or serving others, these things bring joy when they’re done with the purpose of pleasing God. Colossians 3:23 says, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” When we live with this mindset, we begin to see that our lives matter in the grand plan of God.

So, why are you here? You were created for one reason: to bring pleasure to the Creator. Life isn’t about chasing temporary highs or building a legacy for yourself. It’s about glorifying God in everything you do. And when you lose yourself in His purpose, you’ll find the abundant life He’s promised.

God doesn’t just give you a reason to exist—He gives you the joy and peace to live it out. That is the paradox of true purpose. To live for God is to find life, and to die to self is to truly live.
