Most people know Jabez because of his short little prayer in 1 Chronicles 4:9–10. He asked God to bless him, grow his land, and keep him from evil. And God did it.
But here’s something you might not know. There’s a town named Jabez in 1 Chronicles 2:55. And guess who lived there? Not soldiers. Not rich landowners. But scribes. That means men who copied and taught the Word of God lived in a place named after Jabez.
1 Chronicles 2:55a And the families of the scribes which dwelt at Jabez;
Jabez didn’t just pray for more land so he could build barns and fences. He prayed for more so he could do more for God. He likely built a town where men could focus on the Scriptures. Maybe he used what God gave him to make sure the next generation knew the Word of God!
Most people just want God to make life easier. Jabez wanted to be a blessing. He prayed big, and did big things for the Lord. He wanted to build something eternal.
God’s still looking for men like that.
