Hosea 6:6 – “For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.”
Back in Hosea’s day, Israel was going through the motions. They were bringing their offerings, saying the right words, and acting religious. But God wasn’t buying it. He saw their hearts were far from Him. He said He didn’t want more sacrifices. He wanted more mercy. God was looking for a faithful heart, not just a busy hand.
He also said He wanted the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. That doesn’t mean learning facts, it means walking with Him, knowing Him, and living for Him.
Fast forward to the New Testament, and Jesus quotes this verse twice. Once in Matthew 9:13, when the Pharisees complained about Him eating with sinners. And again in Matthew 12:7, when they criticized His disciples for plucking grain on the Sabbath.
In both cases, Jesus was saying the same thing Hosea did. God isn’t impressed with cold religion. He wants real love and real obedience.
The Pharisees looked holy but lacked heart. Just like Israel. They thought following rules made them right with God, but Jesus showed that love and truth were what God cared about most.
We can fall into the same trap—checking boxes, playing church, doing just enough to feel spiritual. But God doesn’t want a show. He wants a relationship.
Let’s stop trying to impress others and start walking with Him. Let’s give Him what He’s always wanted: mercy, faithfulness, and a heart that knows Him.
