Psalm 1:1-3 (KJV)
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
The Blessable Man
Everybody wants to be blessed. But few want to follow the path to get there. Psalm 1 lays it out plain. If you want blessings that keep piling up, you don’t chase them. You live in a way that draws them. God says there is a kind of man He blesses. He tells us what he avoids, what he loves, how he grows, and what happens when he does.
God is not random with His blessings. Psalm 1 is the blueprint for being blessable.
1. Steering Clear of Sinful Company
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” (Psalm 1:1)
The first mark of a man God blesses is where he doesn’t go and who he doesn’t listen to. He doesn’t take advice from people who don’t follow God. He doesn’t get cozy with people who live in sin. And he doesn’t make himself comfortable with those who mock truth.
This man learns to steer clear. He avoids the traps. He keeps good company and walks in wisdom.
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” (Proverbs 13:20)
“Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” (1 Corinthians 15:33)
If you want to be blessable, you’ve got to watch who you walk with. You don’t get clean walking through mud puddles.
2. Staying in the Scriptures
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”
(Psalm 1:2)
A blessable man doesn’t just read the Bible. He loves it. He stays in it. It’s not a chore to him. It’s his joy. It’s what feeds him, settles him, and shapes how he thinks.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…” (Colossians 3:16)
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night…” (Joshua 1:8)
A man who lives in the Word will always have something solid to stand on. He doesn’t need to chase truth, because he’s already holding it.
3. Standing Strong in Every Season
“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season;” (Psalm 1:3a)
Blessing doesn’t always mean ease. Sometimes it means you still bear fruit when others are drying up. The man who walks with God is steady in every season. He’s not up and down all the time. He’s rooted. He’s got deep water, even in dry weather.
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…” (1 Corinthians 15:58)
“They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.” (Psalm 92:14)
It may not be harvest time every day, but the blessable man knows his season is coming. And when it does, he’ll have fruit to show for it.
4. Seeing Success from the Savior
“His leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:3b)
God doesn’t bless dead things. A man who’s rooted in Him will have a life that’s alive and thriving. His leaf stays green. His work has value. His steps are ordered, and his efforts are backed by heaven.
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
“Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.” (Proverbs 16:3)
This kind of success doesn’t come from luck or hustle. It comes from walking with God, staying clean, staying in the Word, and trusting the Lord to bring fruit in due time.
Psalm 1 doesn’t just show us what the blessed life looks like. It shows us how to get there. If you’ll steer clear, stay in the Word, stand firm through your seasons, and follow God’s lead, you’ll find blessings piling up before you even ask.
Blessing upon blessing. Because that’s the kind of man God loves to bless.
