The City in the Rock

Jeremiah 49:16 says,

“Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD.”

The prophet Jeremiah was speaking to Edom, a nation whose pride had grown as high as the cliffs they lived in. Their capital city, Petra, was carved right into the rock. The city was hidden in a deep basin, surrounded by towering red cliffs. There was only one narrow way in and out, a winding canyon about a mile long and in some places just wide enough for one chariot at a time. For an invading army, it was almost impossible to attack.

The Edomites believed no one could reach them. Their homes, their treasures, and their strongholds were set high in the rock like an eagle’s nest. They were feared by others. They trusted in their defenses and their reputation. Over time, that safety gave birth to pride, and pride deceived them into thinking they did not need God.

History shows that God’s words came true. Petra eventually fell. Enemies found their way in, and the people who thought they could never be touched were brought low. Their stone walls and narrow canyons could not save them when the Lord had pronounced judgment.

We can be the same way today. It may not be cliffs and canyons, but we can take pride in our own kind of “fortresses.” Our job. Our home. Our savings. Our skills. Our country. We can begin to think that nothing can shake us. But safety is of the Lord, not of stone or money or skill.

Psalm 127:1 says, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”

Proverbs 21:31 says, “The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.”

Work hard. Prepare wisely. But do not put your trust in walls you can build with your own hands. The only true safety is to put your trust in God. Petra stood for centuries, but in the end, those cliffs could not save them. It’s now just a land mark people visit. Empty ruins. A testimony to God’s judgment.

What you build will last only if the Lord is in it. We should build our house ON the Rock, not IN the rock.
