Abraham: The Father of Faith

Genesis 15:6 “And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.”

Romans 4:3 “For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.”

When we think of Abraham, we think of faith. The Bible calls him the father of all them that believe. He trusted God’s word, even when he could not see the outcome, and through that faith he became an example for all generations. Yet Abraham’s life was more than a model of faith, it pointed us to Christ, the promised seed, who fulfills the blessing for all nations.

Obedience Rooted in Faith

Hebrews 11:8 says, “By faith Abraham… obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” Abraham left his home with no map in hand, but he trusted God’s promise. His obedience flowed out of faith. Christ Himself walked that same path of obedience. Philippians 2:8 says He “became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” Abraham followed in faith, but Christ fulfilled obedience perfectly.

Faith Counted for Righteousness

Genesis 15:6 tells us, “He believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” Abraham was not righteous by his works, but by faith in God’s promise. That truth finds its fulfillment in Christ. Romans 5:19 says, “By the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.” Abraham’s righteousness was imputed by faith. Our righteousness is secured because of Christ’s perfect obedience and our faith put in Him.

The Seed of Promise

God promised Abraham, “In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 22:18). Abraham believed God would bring salvation through his seed. Paul makes it clear in Galatians 3:16: “Thy seed… which is Christ.” The promise was never about many seeds, but about one. Christ is that seed, the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham, the blessing for all nations.

The Testing of Faith

Perhaps the greatest moment in Abraham’s life was when God asked him to offer Isaac. Genesis 22 records Abraham’s obedience. He believed that God could even raise Isaac from the dead (Hebrews 11:17–19). Yet that scene pointed to something greater. John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.” Abraham was willing to offer his son, but God truly gave His.

Faith Leading to Fulfillment

Romans 4:20–21 says Abraham “staggered not at the promise… being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.” His faith clung to God until the promise was fulfilled. Christ Himself walked in that same confidence. Hebrews 12:2 says He endured the cross “for the joy that was set before him.” Abraham shows us faith. Christ shows us fulfillment.

Abraham’s faith was counted for righteousness. Our faith rests in Christ, who is righteousness itself. The father of faith pointed the way, but the Son of God secured the blessing.
