The Steps of Falling Away, and the Steps of God’s Mercy

In Nehemiah 9, the people of Israel stood before God and confessed their sins. It is one of the clearest chapters in the Bible showing two paths. On one side you see man drifting away from God step by step. On the other, you see God showing mercy step by step. It is sobering, but also encouraging, because it reminds us that while we often fail, God never forsakes His own.

The Steps of Falling Away (Nehemiah 9:17)

The Bible gives us a pattern of how people drift. It doesn’t usually happen all at once. It’s a staircase that goes down one step at a time:

1. They refused to obey. Disobedience is always the first step. They knew what God had said, but they chose not to follow it.

2. They weren’t mindful of His wonders. They forgot the mighty things God had done for them. Forgetfulness of God’s goodness leads to unthankfulness.

3. They hardened their necks. Pride came next. They were no longer teachable or willing to be corrected.

4. They appointed a captain to return to bondage. Finally, they planned to go back to Egypt. Choosing slavery over freedom. That’s where sin leads.

This same pattern plays out in people’s lives today. First comes the small refusal to obey, then forgetting God’s blessings, then pride sets in, and finally there is a willful return to the old life of bondage.

The Steps of God’s Mercy (Nehemiah 9:19–31)

But right beside those steps down, the Bible shows us the steps of God’s mercy. While they were drifting, God was still guiding and providing.

1. He forsook them not (v.19). Others may give up on us, but God doesn’t.

2. He guided with a pillar of cloud and fire (v.19). When they were lost, He gave them direction.

3. He gave His Spirit to instruct them (v.20). Even in rebellion, God kept teaching and correcting.

4. He fed them with manna and gave them water (v.20). Daily bread and daily water, just enough to keep them going.

5. Their clothes did not wear out (v.31). God cared even for the smallest details of their life.

6. He gave them kingdoms (v.22, v.31). He blessed them far beyond their needs, even when they didn’t deserve it.

Step by step, God lifted them up, while they were stepping down. That’s the mercy of God.

Nehemiah 9 is a reminder that drifting from God is always a downward path. It starts small and ends in bondage. But it’s also a reminder that God is rich in mercy. He guides, instructs, feeds, clothes, and blesses even when His people turn away.

Maybe today you feel yourself slipping on that staircase. Stop before you get too far. Remember what God has done for you. He hasn’t forsaken you, and He never will. Take a step back toward Him, and you’ll find His mercy waiting.
