In Joshua 23, after years of wandering, fighting, and failing, Israel is finally at rest. They aren’t chasing enemies anymore. God had given them peace on every side.
Joshua is old now. He knows he is about to die, so he gathers the people for one last charge. He looks back at everything they’ve been through; Egypt, the wilderness, and battles they should have lost, and he reminds them that this rest didn’t come easy.
Joshua 23:1, “And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age.”
That rest was a gift, but it wasn’t automatic. And as Joshua warns them, it isn’t automatic to keep it either. We all have seasons where we feel worn down: not just in our bodies, but in our spirits. We get tired of carrying the weight and fighting the same spiritual battles. If you want to keep the peace God gives, Joshua lays out a very clear recipe.
It Takes Courage to Stay Right
Most people think of courage as something you need for a big fight. But Joshua says you need it just to stay obedient.
Joshua 23:6, “Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;”
Anyone can drift. Anyone can loosen up or go quiet when the truth starts to cost something. It takes real backbone to keep doing what you already know is right when the world around you is moving the other way. Rest isn’t maintained by being comfortable; it’s maintained by being courageous.
The Danger of the Mixture
The battle outside is usually easier than the mixture inside because the battle lines are clear. God warned Israel not to “come among” the nations they had defeated. He knew that if they started picking up the habits and the talk of the people around them, their rest wouldn’t last.
Joshua 23:7, “That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:”
What you let in will eventually shape you. You don’t lose your spiritual rest overnight; you lose it by letting the wrong things sit in your heart for too long. If you start living like the world, you’ll start worrying like the world.
Hold On Tight
Joshua tells them to “cleave” unto the LORD. This isn’t a casual relationship, it’s deliberate with a tight grip. When things get hard or the pressure turns up, most people naturally loosen their grip on God. Joshua says to do the exact opposite:
Tighten it.
Joshua 23:8, “But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.”
Rest isn’t found in getting distance from God; it’s found in staying as close as possible.
Don’t Lose Your Memory
Joshua reminds them that “no man hath been able to stand before you.” He wanted them to look back at what God had already done.
Joshua 23:9, “For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.”
Rest stays when your memory stays on what God has done. The second you forget how God delivered you in the past, you start living like everything depends on you into the future. That is exactly where anxiety and fear creep back into the picture. When you remember His track record, you can rest in His future.
Rest and Disobedience Don’t Mix
Joshua doesn’t soften the blow. He reminds them that just as God kept His promises to bless them, He would also keep His warnings if they turned away.
Joshua 23:15-16, “Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things… When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God…”
You cannot hold onto a secret sin and expect the peace of God to stay in your house. They don’t live in the same place.
Rest is not just the absence of problems. It is the result of staying right with God through hard things. Israel had rest because God gave it, but they kept it by staying clean and staying obedient. As they turned from God, their rest went away.
The same is true for you today. You can have peace in your life, but it won’t come from just slowing down your schedule or taking a vacation. True rest comes from lining your life back up with God. When you are aligned with Him, the rest takes care of itself.
Jesus reminds us that He’s our rest:
Matthew 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
