Beware Lest Thou Forget

There’s a powerful warning tucked into Deuteronomy 6:10-12. But to understand it, we must back up and look at the bigger picture.

God’s people started out as slaves in Egypt. They were beaten down, broken, and begging for help. And God heard them. He raised up Moses, brought ten plagues on Egypt, parted the Red Sea, gave them water from a rock and bread from heaven. Their clothes didn’t wear out for forty years! You’d think after all that, they’d trust and obey the LORD. But no. They grumbled, made a golden calf, doubted Him, and disobeyed over and over. So He made them wander the wilderness for forty years until that whole doubting generation died off.

Now here in Deuteronomy, the next generation is about to walk into the Promised Land. And let me tell you, it was a sweet deal.

God was giving them:

  • Cities they didn’t build
  • Houses fully furnished
  • Wells they didn’t dig
  • Vineyards and olive trees they didn’t plant

That’s like walking into a fully stocked house with groceries in the fridge and a garden already blooming. But there was one thing God made clear: don’t forget Me.

“Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.”   Deuteronomy 6:12

They were warned: If they acted like the wicked nations before them, they’d end up just like them, judged, destroyed, and driven out.

And that’s where we come in today.

We’re living in a land full of blessings. Most of us have way more than we need. We’ve got houses, cars, phones, jobs, and freedoms. But let’s be honest, we’re also living in a land full of sin.

Just look around—

  • Pride is celebrated
  • Lust is everywhere
  • Truth is hated
  • Sin is called normal
  • And God is being pushed out

We can’t live like the world and expect to be blessed like God’s people. The same warning that went out back then needs to ring in our ears today: Beware lest thou forget.

Here are three quick things God reminded them of, and that we need to remember today too:

1. Don’t Let the Blessing Blind You
(“When thou shalt have eaten and be full…” – Deut. 6:11)

When life is good, it’s easy to stop depending on God. When your belly’s full and bills are paid, you might forget the One who provided it all. God warned them, and He warns us too: Don’t let comfort kill your walk with Me.

“Charge them that are rich… that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God…” – 1 Timothy 6:17

2. Don’t Forget the Pit He Pulled You From
(“Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt…” – Deut. 6:12)

Egypt wasn’t a vacation—it was slavery. God wants us to remember where He brought us from. We were saved out of sin, addiction, rebellion, pride—you name it. Don’t act like you did it on your own. He saved you. Don’t forget that.

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

3. Don’t Go Back to What He Set You Free From
(“…from the house of bondage.” – Deut. 6:12)

He didn’t just save you from something, He saved you for something. Bondage isn’t freedom. Going back to sin is like asking to be a slave again. God didn’t bring you this far to watch you run back to the chains.

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free…” – Galatians 5:1

So, God’s been good. Real good.

But the more blessed we are, the more likely we are to forget the One who gave it all.

Don’t forget Him. Don’t forget where you came from. And don’t forget what He saved you from.

Beware lest thou forget.
