PART 4 – Be Ye Therefore Followers of God as Dear Children: Walking in the Light (4 of 11)

Ephesians 5:8 reminds us, “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”

Paul makes it clear that before our knowledge of Christ, we were in darkness. We lived lives unaware of the truth, stumbling through a world filled with sin and deception.

Ephesians 5:5-6 warns us about the darkness we once lived in: “For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.”

These verses paint a picture of our former lives, where sin reigned and led us away from God.

But we are no longer children of darkness. We are children of light!

The transformation that occurs when we come to Christ changes everything. Light has a powerful effect—it cleanses and exposes. As we draw closer to the light of Christ, the more clearly we see the dirt in our lives, the sins that need to be confessed and forsaken. But this light also guides us, showing us the path that God has laid out for us.

When we were in darkness, we stumbled, unsure of where we were headed, not knowing if the next step would lead to destruction. But as children of the light, we walk on a straight and narrow road. The Bible promises that God’s Word will be a constant guide for us. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” God’s Word shines brightly, helping us navigate through life with clarity and purpose.

Walking in the light means living a life that reflects the character of Christ. It means avoiding the pitfalls of sin and seeking out what is good, pure, and holy. It means that our actions, words, and thoughts should be influenced by the light of God’s truth.

As followers of God, we must continually seek to walk in the light, allowing it to reveal the way we should go and cleanse us from anything that is not pleasing to Him. Let the light of Christ shine through you, guiding your steps and helping others to see the way as well.
