Abel: The Righteous Sacrifice

Genesis 4:4 “And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering.”

Hebrews 12:24 “And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.”

Abel’s life was short, but his testimony has lasted thousands of years. Though his brother Cain killed him, the Bible says, “he being dead yet speaketh” (Hebrews 11:4). What does he speak?

Cain’s Way – Man’s Effort

When Cain brought his offering to the Lord, it looked good on the outside. He brought the fruit of the ground, the result of his labor. But it was bloodless. It was man’s effort and man’s way, and God rejected it. It showed pride and self-righteousness. Cain thought he could come to God on his own terms, but worship without faith and without blood is never enough.

Abel’s Way – God’s Pattern

Abel came with the firstlings of his flock. His offering required the shedding of blood, which pointed to the truth that without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22). Abel’s sacrifice was about trusting God’s promise. He obeyed God’s pattern, and God accepted him.

What Their Offerings Teach Us

The two brothers represent two ways people try to approach God. Cain represents works, pride, and rejection. Abel represents faith, obedience, and life through the blood. Cain trusted in his effort, Abel trusted in God’s promise.

God’s Answer

God made His opinion clear. He respected Abel’s offering but had no respect for Cain’s. The Bible goes further and says Cain’s works were evil, but Abel’s were righteous (1 John 3:12). Abel’s blood cried out for justice after his murder, but the blood of Christ speaks something far greater, it speaks of mercy and forgiveness (Hebrews 12:24).

Abel’s life reminds us that God does not accept worship offered on our terms. He only accepts it through faith and through the blood of Christ. Our works will never save us. Our effort will never be enough. Salvation is only through the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ.

Abel’s testimony is clear: faith in God’s way brings acceptance and life. Trust in your own effort, and you will face rejection and death. He is dead, but he still speaks, and his voice points us to the cross.
