Noah: The Ark of Salvation

1 Peter 3:20–21 “Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

The story of Noah is a picture of salvation. The ark was the only refuge from judgment, and Christ is our Ark today. Just as Noah and his family were safe inside, believers are secure in Christ.

One Ark, One Door

Genesis 6:16 speaks of “the door of the ark.” There was only one way inside. In the same way, Jesus said, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” (John 10:9). There was not a back entrance, or a secret way in. One door, one Savior, one way to God.

Sealed From Wrath

God told Noah to cover the ark with pitch inside and out (Genesis 6:14). That sealing kept the waters of judgment out. For us, it is the blood of Christ that seals us. Ephesians 1:7 says, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.” The ark was waterproof, and Christ’s blood is soul-proof.

The Storm and the Savior

When judgment fell, the ark bore the storm, and those inside were saved (Genesis 7:23). In the same way, Jesus bore the wrath of God for us. Isaiah 53:5 says, “He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities.” The flood fell, but it never touched those inside. God’s wrath fell on Christ, and now it will never touch those who are in Him.

God Shut the Door

Genesis 7:16 says, “and the LORD shut him in.” Noah didn’t close the door himself. God did. Salvation is God’s work, not ours. Jesus said, “him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37). What God shuts, no man can open. What God seals, no man can break.

Rest and New Life

The ark eventually rested on the mountains of Ararat (Genesis 8:4). Christ gives rest to the believer: “Come unto me… and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). And when Noah stepped out of the ark, he entered a new world. That points to the new life we have in Christ: “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The ark was God’s plan, God’s provision, and God’s protection. Today, salvation is no different. There is one way, one Savior, and one refuge from judgment: Jesus Christ.
