How Jesus Saves: The Day Grace Stopped in Jericho

1. Jesus Sees Beyond the Bank Account

(Luke 18:35–19:10)

Before Zacchaeus, Jesus healed a blind beggar outside Jericho. The beggar had nothing; Zacchaeus had everything. Yet both were lost.

Jesus doesn’t measure by money or success. 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”

He saw two men with the same need: forgiveness. Whether poor or rich, all must be saved the same way.

2. Jesus Humbles the Proud

(Luke 19:3–4)

Zacchaeus “sought to see Jesus who he was.” That’s where salvation starts, a desire to see Him.

He ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree. Rich men didn’t run or climb after others. But grace breaks pride.

That sycamore tree wasn’t random. The sycamore produced fruit that only the poor ate.  Fruit that was cheap, common, and low to the ground. For a man like Zacchaeus, rich and respected in position, to climb that tree was almost embarrassing. Yet that’s what grace does. It drives a man to humility. Scripture says, “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble” (James 4:6). Before Zacchaeus could see Jesus, he had to come down from his pride, both literally and spiritually. The man who had spent his life climbing for wealth now climbed to receive mercy.

3. Jesus Calls Personally and Urgently

(Luke 19:5)

When Jesus reached the spot, He looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down.”

That’s how Jesus calls every sinner, personally and urgently.

John 10:3 says, “He calleth his own sheep by name.”

Salvation is not random; it’s personal. Jesus stopped under Zacchaeus’ tree because He was there on purpose.

4. Jesus Saves Instantly and Completely

(Luke 19:6, 9)

Zacchaeus came down “and received Him joyfully.” Jesus declared, “This day is salvation come to this house.”

There’s no probation period for grace. Salvation happens the moment Christ is received by faith.

Romans 10:9 says, “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart… thou shalt be saved.”

Zacchaeus didn’t just get religion, he got redemption.

5. Jesus Transforms Hearts Beyond the Law

(Luke 19:8)

Zacchaeus stood and said, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing… I restore him fourfold.”

The law only required repayment plus 20%. He went far beyond that.

Grace changes the heart from greed to generosity.

Romans 5:20 says, “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.”

Zacchaeus didn’t pay his way into heaven, he proved heaven had moved into him.

6. Jesus Was Lifted Up So Sinners Could Come Down

(Luke 19:4 with John 12:32)

Zacchaeus climbed up a tree to see Jesus. Soon, Jesus would be lifted up on a tree to save men like Zacchaeus.

Acts 5:30 says, “Jesus… whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.”

The man who came down from a tree met the Savior who would die on one.

Grace met sin halfway up that sycomore and finished the work on Calvary.

Jesus didn’t just pass through Jericho, He stopped for one man.He saw a sinner, called him by name, saved him completely, and left Jericho having finished His mission: “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
