Like a Bottle in the Smoke

Psalm 119:83  “For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.”

A leather bottle left hanging in smoke gets dried out, stiff, cracked, and black. That’s what the psalmist felt like: worn out, forgotten, and scorched by trouble. But even in that condition, he still clung to God’s Word.

Some seasons feel just like that. Everything’s pressing in. You don’t feel useful, and you sure don’t feel strong. But in those dry, dark days, the question is, Do we still remember His Word?

God never promised life would be without the smoke. He just promised to be with us through it.

Paul said something similar in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9: “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”

Trouble may press you down, but it doesn’t have to pull you away from the Word.

Keep trusting. Keep reading. Keep walking. Even if you feel like a dried-up bottle in the rafters.
