The Priest Who Carried a Sword

Most people think priests were gentle, quiet, always tucked away in the temple. But one priest in the Bible would’ve made a lion think twice. His name was Benaiah, and he shows up in 1 Chronicles 27:5-6. He wasn’t just any priest, he was a warrior.

He’s called “a chief priest,” but the Bible also says he was the captain of the third course of David’s army, leading 24,000 soldiers. That’s not normal. Priests didn’t typically do that. But God used Benaiah because he was set apart, brave, and had the heart to fight for what was right.

Qualities We Should Emulate

1. He Took His Calling Seriously

Benaiah was born into the priesthood, but he didn’t just light incense and read Scripture. He fought for the king. He protected God’s people. He handled what others wouldn’t.

“…he was mighty among the thirty, and above the thirty…” (1 Chron. 27:6)

Today, we’re called to serve God with our whole life, not just inside a church building. Benaiah didn’t see his role as one or the other, he lived fully for God in whatever battle came.

2. He Fought with Courage and Grit

He chased a lion into a pit on a snowy day (2 Sam. 23:20). Most people would’ve run the other way. Not him. He didn’t back down, no matter the conditions.

As Christians, we can’t let fear or comfort stop us from standing for truth. Whether it’s popular or not, whether it’s cold and hard, we fight anyway.

3. He Knew Who the Real King Was

Benaiah stayed loyal to David and later to Solomon when the kingdom was under threat. That loyalty got him promoted.

Today, we serve the King of Kings. Our loyalty should be to Jesus alone, not the world, not trends. We take orders from Him and follow all the way.

We Are Warrior Priests Too

You may not wear armor or carry a sword, but God calls every saved person to be both a priest and a warrior.

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people…”
1 Peter 2:9

“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” 2 Timothy 2:3

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:11

We’re called to pray like priests and fight like soldiers. To show mercy and truth. To serve and to stand. Just like Benaiah did.
